Mauna Kea, Island of Hawai'i

Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano in Hawaii reaching elevations of 13,800 feet. You will need a jeep or 4X4 vehicle to reach the summit as some roads are unpaved and bumpy. The lack of oxygen at these heights (roughly 40% less oxygen) can leave you feeling dizzy and nauseous even while exerting little effort. It can also get extremely cold up here so its recommended that you wear appropriate attire (otherwise, you may not last very long outside your vehicle).

The views along the way are breathtaking, but nothing beats the 360 panorama from the top of Mauna Kea. Even if you experience some altitude sickness, the trade off is worth it. Here, you will witness the most epic sunsets and clearest and undisturbed night skies as you are far above the clouds. The zero light pollution and closer proximity to planets makes it an ideal destination for astronomers world wide that fancy star gazing or are looking to conduct research.
